General
The reservoir "Velill" is located 2500 meters above sea level and was comissioned by the "Silvrettaseilbahn AG" (owner of the skiing resort) to expand their capabilities for the production of artificial snow. The new basin will be constructed in the area of a former small pond, where the topographic conditions are ideal and where it can easily be integrated in the land scape. The reservoir will be partly built into the terrain and a dam will be raised downstream.
It will mainly be filled by natural melting water and flood water flow. The water can also be pumped from another storage tank.
Construction process
Following the engineer's design, a 20cm thick mineralic drainage layer is applied using a slope paver. Furthermore, a 8cm thick binder course and dense asphaltic concrete of 8cm thickness are added to the slope as well as to the floor level. Finally the entire asphalt area is covered with a mastic sealing. Following the design, a berm with a width of 30-40cm is planned 3m underneath the crest.
This berm is covered with rock fill as well as with the asphalt coat. Due to this, a small benching is formed, which prevents the natural looking rock fill placed in the upper 3m from slipping down, using an additional asphalt wedge.
Special features
The whole construction (earthwork, pipe construction, concrete and asphalt works) should be completed during one summer period. Due to the fact that part of construction has to be done simultaneously, various companies and teams will be working together closely and therefore several coordinating and logistic efforts will have to be realised. |
