555 metre challenge - repair of the Limmat bridge

The renovation of the "Limmat Bridge" is a construction project with many interfaces and conditions imposed by environmental associations and the responsible authorities. The almost inconspicuous bridge starts and stops in the settlement area and crosses a nature reserve, the river Limmat, the most frequented pedestrian path along the Limmat river, one of the most frequented railway lines in Switzerland, the main axis Zurich-Bern, as well as two cantonal and two municipal roads.

Grand-Pont in Lausanne: Restoration of a symbolic monument

The Grand Pont in Lausanne is not just any bridge. It is the main artery connecting the east of the Olympic city with the west. The square and the streets under the bridge lie in a valley filled in 1874, the former Valée du Flon. The second row of the bridge arches is hidden under the fill. So it was once a really big viaduct, not only in length but also in height.

A new piece of the city - Westfeld Basel

Around the old Felix-Platter-Spital, now converted into residential space, a showcase project for a trend-setting housing culture was created in 2015 by the building cooperative wohnen&mehr, which was founded for this purpose. This district is sustainable and, above all, affordable housing with a healthy mix of different family forms, age groups and population strata. The first flats have been ready for occupancy since January 2023.

Kindergarten Looren, Kloten

After the city of Kloten had to struggle with massive space problems for school rooms, it was decided to build a new building on the Looren site. This was to house a kindergarten as well as a crèche. WALO Dietikon was able to convince with a very special floor.

New parking facility in Bern Bümpliz

The Bern region is an important hub in Switzerland's rail network. Due to various construction projects, the number of stabling areas for trains has been greatly reduced in recent years. The current "AS25, Bern West performance enhancement" project will also result in the loss of further stabling tracks. To compensate for this, SBB has now built a new stabling facility for long-distance and regional trains at Bern Bümpliz South station. At the same time, the two tracks were renewed over a length of around one kilometer.

Commissioned in 1897, the funicular railroad in the canton of Vaud connects Cossonay with Penthalaz over a length of 1230 meters. At the beginning of August 2020, the Walo team started the construction work, which includes the demolition and reconstruction of the two station buildings and the track work.

The Sihl Tunnel, located in the inner-city area, needed a renewal of the roadway. The first lot took place during the summer vacations in a 7-week total closure (from July 13 to September 1, 2019).

Bank rehabilitation in the Auhafen Muttenz for Steiger Clariant

Port activities at the project site resulted in both waterside and landside exposure of the embankment. On the water side, the bow thrusters of the large cargo ships were responsible for washouts below the waterline, while above the waterline, the handling operations in the port and the subsequent cleaning of the embankment led to erosion phenomena. The project comprised the construction of a stable embankment foot by means of sheet piling, the reconstruction of the existing sloping embankment - partly under water, the grouting of local damaged areas, as well as the replacement of the partly existing grass pavers by closed concrete slabs.

Chillon Viaducts, Switzerland

The Chillon viaducts are located in Switzerland, over the east end of Lake Geneva, south east of Montreux. It comprises two parallel 1.4 mile long prestressed concrete box girder bridges, bearing the east and westbound lanes of the Swiss A9 highway. Built in the 1960s, it was one of the largest works in prestressed concrete for many years, so it was of great historic value to the area. Originally designed to sustain an estimated volume of 10,000 vehicles per day, it is currently being used by 50,000 vehicles daily.

Tamedia Headquarters Zurich

The new Tamedia building in Zurich was designed by Japanese star architect Shigeru Ban. Tamedia's Chairman of the Board of Directors, Pietro Supino, hired him. He had seen a building by the Japanese architect on Long Island (USA) and was impressed. The building's supporting structure is special. It is made exclusively of spruce wood. The Surfatex terrazzo floor on the first floor is made of hand-sized stones cut from streams in Ticino.

For the redesign of the Sechseläutenplatz in Zurich, the focus was on three basic principles: opening up, greening and flexible use of the square. The surface of the new square was formed from stone belts of Vals quartzite cut to size on all sides.

In 2013, the Municipality of Donat repaired the first steel-reinforced concrete arch bridge in Switzerland. The Cottonmount Landﬁll Site is located in Mallusk, Antrim County in Northern Ireland, just outside Belfast. The site is within Cottonmount Quarry, a working hard rock quarry, which receives municipal waste from Belfast City. WALO was appointed to construct three landfill cells using its Dense Asphaltic Concrete (DAC).
