AIR Restaurant - Zurich Airport

Experience gastronomy with the WALO rubber granulate floor HALTOPEX®.

At the end of 2017, the restaurant at the spectator terrace of Kloten Airport was restored and the new restaurant "AIR" was created. Initially, it was planned to equip the floor with a terrazzo floor. However, due to the nature of the subsoil, this was not possible. WALO was able to convince the client and the architect of the flexibility and versatility of the HALTOPEX® rubber granulate flooring.

Nevertheless, the surface of the subfloor posed special but solvable difficulties. Since different and very uneven substrates were encountered, the surface had to be completely pretreated and leveled because of the numerous and complicated inserts. Cement and epoxy mortar were used to create the leveling layers.

The walkways were visually separated from the various seating and food areas as multi-colored taxiways, thus visualizing the flight guidance lines of a taxiway. The incorporation of the approx. 600m of walkways and the prefabricated lettering in the floor required a great deal of tact and technical know-how.

Special features

A total of over 900 m2 of HALTOPEX® rubber granulate flooring in four different colors was installed. The multi-colored floor placed high demands on our floor layers, which can be seen in the special attention to detail. A particular difficulty was encountered during numerous sanding operations, where care had to be taken to ensure that the sanding dust from the light and dark floors did not mix or leave any residue. The cooperation with the various trades and the long transport routes on the airport site also presented a logistical challenge. All in all, a masterpiece made by WALO.

The AIR design bridges the gap between contemporary interior design and emotional airport history. It includes a bar, a restaurant, a bakery and the terrace. The aviation feeling in the overall composition between walls, floors and ceiling creates wanderlust and is definitely worth a visit.
