New construction Albula tunnel

On August 31, 2015, the official kick-off ceremony for the construction of the new Albula Tunnel of the Rhaetian Railway (RhB) took place in Preda. The project involves the construction of an approximately six-kilometer-long tunnel, which is located at an altitude of over 1,800 meters above sea level and is being driven from two sides.

Project description

After three years of work by the miners, the breakthrough of the tunnel calotte of the Pinchat railroad tunnel in Geneva took place in October 2015. This tunnel is part of the CEVA project, which involves the construction of an international rail link between the Geneva-Cornavin SBB station and the Annemasse station in France. Part of the project was a new cross-border double-track railroad line from Cornavin via Eaux-Vives to Annemasse. Lot 23.12 runs from Carouge-Bachet to Val d'Arve and includes a two-kilometer mining tunnel, along with the Carouge-Bachet underground station.

Special features

The structure will be handed over to SBB in spring 2017 so that the tunnel can be equipped with the necessary railroad technology. Commissioning is scheduled for the end of 2019.
