Repair Schwarzwaldallee Basel

The bridge elevated Schwarzwaldallee, built between 1973 and 1976, needed to be repaired after about 40 years of operation.

Project description

The national road N02 was put into operation in the 1970s. After 40 years of operation, the existing national road section is in need of rehabilitation.

The bridge structure Aufgeständerte Schwarzwaldallee in the maintenance section Osttangente Basel was subjected to a comprehensive condition check. Based on this, measures were planned in accordance with the project objectives, which have now been implemented in a complete overhaul with structural reinforcement.

The following main works were carried out in this context:

  • The bottom as well as top view of the bridge deck, the abutment walls and retaining walls were subjected to a comprehensive concrete repair. In addition, the bridge deck was reinforced.
  • The existing roadway crossings were removed and replaced. The bridge bearings were partially replaced.
  • Highly exposed structural elements such as abutment walls and supports, as well as the edge curbs, were given a hydrophobic impregnation (surface protection).
  • The bridge drainage system was repaired, but in some cases replacement was necessary.
  • The waterproofing and the pavement as well as the curbs were completely renewed. The existing bridge railing was completely replaced on one side and adapted and revised on the other.

Special features

Traffic management took a key position during the repair work, both on the national highway and on the city level. The traffic flow on the highway had to be permanently guaranteed during the day and the number of lanes could not be reduced. For this reason, the repair work on the freeway was carried out at night by means of lane removal and traffic detour. The work on the local road level was carried out during the day. In total, the rehabilitation measures on the freeway were implemented in four construction phases and on the local road level in three construction phases.
