Overview

SAP Garden Munich

In the heart of Munich’s Olympic Park, the SAP Garden has been constructed as the new home arena for the German ice hockey champions EHC Red Bull Munich and the German basketball champions FC Bayern Munich Basketball. WALO was responsible for installing the freezing plates, including the substructure.

Project Description

The arena accommodates 11,500 spectators in basketball configuration and 10,500 in ice hockey mode. It is designed to allow a rapid conversion from ice operation to basketball. A unique, hydraulically elevating stage system creates an additional 1,000 seats during the basketball setup, ensuring that there are no “bad” seats from the spectators’ perspective. The foundation for this is the freezing plate system, including the required substructure, installed by WALO.

The materials for the four ice surfaces (see box) were delivered by approximately 250 trucks and installed on schedule. Our site foreman, Mr. Casimiro De Sousa, led the on-site operations. The installation was supported by PZ560, using laser-guided concrete screeding equipment and additional manpower. Each ice field, covering 1,800 m², was completed by a ten-man crew in a single, jointless operation – including surface finishing – within roughly 12 hours.

Particularly noteworthy was the location of the ice fields: situated on the first basement level with no direct exterior access. This allowed us to fully align with our ecological values. We used only battery-powered trowelling machines, which also contributed to the outstanding result.

For the connecting zones between the artificial ice rinks, we naturally applied the seamless Haltopex-HPE floor covering. Thanks to its high mechanical resistance and slip resistance, it is ideally suited for use in ice arenas – especially in areas where people move between rinks in skates without damaging either the blades or the flooring. The flawless Haltopex-HPE surface and the four areas (1 playing field and 3 training rinks of 1,800 m² each, totalling 7,200 m²) were delivered to the client with the required high precision – clean, seamless, crack-free, without defects, and on time.

This project once again demonstrated the strength of our team collaboration. On installation day, staff from both PZ units worked together as seamlessly as if they were part of the same crew every day. This excellent cooperation and communication between the Flooring North and Flooring East teams ultimately proved to be the key to a smooth process and successful project completion.
