Sustainability and compliance are not new topics at WALO. They have been hallmarks of decision-making, processes and everyday life for many years. And yet, for a long time, there was little sign of this online. Lots of substance, little space. Lots of content, but barely any direction. In redesigning its approach to these topics, WALO has taken precisely this as its starting point: not reinventing something, but making visible what has long been put into practice.
Background
Once upon a time, everything was combined into a single page. Sustainability, compliance, reports, codes of conduct – densely structured, compact, factual. Important content was struggling to find its readership. If you were looking for something, you had to hunt around to find it. “At some point, you realise that good content alone is not enough,” says Claudia Marra, Sustainability Manager at WALO. “If responsibility is taken seriously, it must also be clear, comprehensible and logical.” This realisation ushered in a new approach.

New structure
When sorting the content, it quickly became clear: sustainability and compliance are closely related, but they are not the same thing. They address different target groups, answer different questions and require different degrees of depth.
Now both topics have their own digital space. Clearly structured, logically organised and placed where you intuitively expect them. This means the reader always knows what they are looking for – and makes connections apparent. “This separation is not a design decision. It is an expression of the fact that we attach the same importance to both topics – while maintaining the necessary clarity,” says Marra.
Sustainability at WALO is not a static concept. It is constantly evolving – in everyday life, in projects and in responsible behaviour. The new page shows where specifically sustainability is put into practice: with clear focal points, insights and stories from the company. If you stop by, you will discover both facts and specific examples.
Graphical aids such as key figures, diagrams and visual comparisons are gradually being added to the section. These make progress and developments visible at a glance. The sustainability reports are also brought together in one place and easily accessible here.
Compliance fosters trust. It represents clear rules, transparent processes and an attitude that gives top priority to fairness and integrity. The new page brings together key elements such as WALO’s values, the Supplier Code of Conduct and the whistleblower system – in a manner that is clear, understandable and accessible.
This shows how we embed responsibility in everyday life: in collaborating with partners, in our dealings with each other and by taking whistleblowing disclosures seriously.
Outlook
The redesigning of sustainability and compliance is a beginning rather than an end. Content is being added, focal points are being honed and new insights are being introduced. The result is a field that is continuing to grow with WALO’s commitment – and serves as an ever clearer example of how responsibility is practised within the company.
«For us, transparency does not mean being perfect. It means openly showing where we stand – and how we are continuing to progress.»
