The single-track Wasserfluh Tunnel, with its historical significance and structural as well as geological challenges, required a comprehensive renovation of the roadway. This included drainage, invert concrete works, pressurized water piping, lighting, and the adaptation of railway technology. Two key ideas proved decisive in the tender process: the use of short-head concrete sleepers, which reduced the need to "scrape" the tunnel walls, and a central drainage system that allowed for additional space. As a result, the relatively new pressurized water pipeline, installed in 2012, could remain untouched.
During the project approval phase, WALO proposed the refurbishment of the Thur Viaduct as well - a historic bridge in Lichtensteig. This led to additional assignments for WALO but also resulted in more confined space conditions, requiring more complex logistics, including the use of a tower crane.
We appreciate your interest in the WALO Group and are happy to answer any questions you may have.
